Déjà mentionnés précédemment mais ils sont impossibles à oublier. Leurs albums sortent en ce moment et sont formidables.
Aussi bien en solo qu'accompagné de sa dulcinée, le Bowie canadien fait des ravages. Il n'a jamais chanté aussi tendrement sur Blue Flower/Blue Flame, composition fluide, presque susurrée qui ouvre son dernier chef d'oeuvre Trouble In Dreams. Plaza Trinidad et son final fou de lalala dépote, Foam Hands est toujours aussi formidable et la pièce maîtresse Shooting Rockets (From the Desk of Night's Ape) est simplement magnifique.
Chez Hello, Blue Roses c'est Sydney Vermont qui illumine les compositions. Le folk acoustique ne reste là qu'au second plan, c'est la voix de Sydney qui relève les accords de guitare et les notes de piano. Elle rappelle vaguement Kate Bush, s'envole dans les airs comme dans un opéra pour ne jamais attérir. L'enchaînement Coming Through Imposture/Golden Fruit/Come Darkness en milieu d'album est assez phénoménal.
Entire Cities jouent ce qu'ils appellent du punk psychédélique. A forte tendance country alternative, les sept énergumènes de Toronto expérimentent la musique, dérangeant Limbeck et Brakes dans leur folie, conviant l'originalité de Little Barrie à la noirceur de Blanche, mêlant assidûment/acidement tous les groupes d'indie pop mignonne à base d'instrumentations délicieuses, aussi bien canadiens (The New Pornographers, Apostle Of Hustle, The Unicorns, Immaculate Machine) qu'américains (Bishop Allen, The Terrordactyls, Coconut Records, The Deadly Syndrome). Ils se nomment Simon Borer (guitare, chant), Tamara Lindeman (banjo, chant), Brendan Howlett (basse, trompette), Dwight Schenk (guitare), Ruhee Dewji (flûte, chant), Paul McCrady (clavier, chant) et Paul Weadick (batterie, chant) + Josh Lyon (clavier, accordéon, chant), Stefanie Bruce (harpe) et David Missio (guitare). Esmerine est un groupe instrumental de Montréal formé par Bruce Cawdron et Beckie Foon. Ils ont participé/ont fait partie de Godspeed You! Black Emperor, A Silver Mt. Zion et Set Fire To Flames. Ils ont réalisé deux albums au sein de Esmerine. Le premier, If Only a Sweet Surrender to the Nights to Come Be True, est paru en mai 2003 ; le second, Aurora, en mai 2005. Leur post-rock intègre divers instruments comme le violoncelle et le xylophone.
Et sinon, important : A Silver Mt. Zion sortent sous leur nom devenu officiel Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra and Tra-La-La Band leur cinquième album renommé 13 Blues for Thirteen Moons en mars prochain.

Les canadiens doivent être super bons au Uno. A tous les jeux, en fait. Je suis sûr que ce sont les genres de personnes à dire "oh lala, regardez comme il neige" en pointant du doigt la fenêtre et mettre un cinq rouge par-dessus un trois jaune. Ou à avancer de six cases au lieu de quatre. Ou même s'occupent-ils tout simplement des scores. Ou de la banque. Bref les canadiens, c'est certain, doivent tricher. Car il est humainement impossible de pondre autant de bons disques. Juste impossible. Ici, c'est A. C. Newman, leader de The New Pornographers, qui a sorti le génial The Slow Wonder en juin 2004, malheureusement passé relativement inaperçu par chez nous. C'est vraiment dommage car on touche encore une fois à la pop délurée des New Pornographers, peut-être un peu moins power, encore que. Des instrumentations baroques (mon dieu, ce The town halo ... !), des refrains imparables, des effets de voix barrés, bref de l'indie rock déjanté donc parfait - dont la chanson On the Table se voit présente sur la compilation Music from the OC: Mix 4 de 2005.
Après avoir vaguement entendu Dan Bejar sur la chanson Hello, Blue Roses sur le MonEspace du groupe Hello, Blue Roses pendant plus de deux mois, j'avais peur que The Portrait Is Finished And I Have Failed to Capture Your Beauty me déçoive. Mais au final, non. Au contraire, il est même très très bon. Hello, Blue Roses ne s'avère être en fait qu'un amuse-bouche tant les treize autres compositions sont aussi - pour la plupart plus - mélodiques et envoûtantes.
"Visual artist Sydney Vermont and her man Dan Bejar (Destroyer, The New Pornographers, Swan Lake) formed Hello, Blue Roses in Vancouver in 2005. Sydney writes the songs & Dan arranges them. Song ideas were knocked back and forth over a period of 2 years. Last year Dan & Sydney took time out of regular life to be together, write, read and think about life differently; It was in the balmy climes of their home away from home - Malaga, Spain - that the originals that make up their debut album, The Portrait Is Finished And I Have Failed to Capture Your Beauty... took real shape. In mid 2007, Hello, Blue Roses committed these songs to tape with the help of friends and family after their return to Vancouver at longtime fave spot JC/DC studios. Roses cite 60s faves (Bridget St. John, Bill Fay, the group sing of Trees Community), 80s AOR (Prefab Sprout & Kate Bush) and the cheery mysticism of young Scotland ( Orange Juice & Felt) as musical influences to their sparsely populated, timeless pop sound."
Les arrangements sublimes à la guitare acoustique de Dan Bejar, la voix magistrale un peu d'opéra de Sydney Vermont : 14 titres à la beauté simple. Parfois, il ne faut pas plus.
L'album n'est pas encore sorti (fin janvier) que Hello, Blues Roses se voient déjà réinterprétés par un autre groupe. En l'occurence, il s'agit de Ruby Isle, jeune groupe américain fort sympathique qui s'essaie à de nombreuses reprises (dont The Raveonettes, Sonic Youth et Kate Bush).
Apostle Of Hustle a vu le jour en 2002 grâce à Andrew Whiteman, l'un des guitaristes de Broken Social Scene. Après deux groupes (Bourbon Tabernacle Choir et Que Vida) et un effort solo en 95 (Fear of Zen), le voilà aux commandes de Apostle Of Hustle, rapidement rejoint par Julian Brown et Daniel Stone. Ils sortent un excellent premier opus en 2004, Folkloric Feel, dans lequel se mêlent influences latines et folk endiablé.
Début 2007 paraît National Anthem of Nowhere, où la world music se fait davantage ressentir, jonglant entre rythmes cubains et textes en espagnol, et où l'indie rock dévoile des claviers à vif et un dub sauvage (pour preuve, entre autres, le fantastique The Nakes And Alone).
Entre la démesure épique de Arcade Fire et la power pop psyché des New Pornographers se pose le rock baroque de Immaculate Machine.
"Immaculate Machine are a Canadianindie pop band from Victoria, British Columbia. The group, which is made up of Brooke Gallupe on guitar, Kathryn Calder on keyboards, and Luke Kozlowski on drums, released two self-published albums before signing with Mint Records in early 2005; their Mint Records debut, Ones and Zeros, came out on September 6, 2005, and they supported the album with a tour of Canada and the United States. The band makes frequent use of two and three-part vocal harmonies; all members share vocal duties both live and in the studio.
The band began attracting national and international attention in 2005 when Calder became a sometime member of The New Pornographers, appearing on the album Twin Cinema and touring with the band. Calder is the niece of New Pornographers leader A.C. Newman.
The band's name is taken from the lyrics of One-Trick Pony from the album One-Trick Pony by Paul Simon.
In early June 2007, the band's song, Jarhand was featured as the iTunes free single of the week."
Le groupe a débuté les hostilités avec The View, un passionnant EP de 6 titres ne contenant que des perles. S'ensuit Transporter l'année d'après, tout aussi imparable et délirant. Ones and Zeros paraît l'année suivante encore, en 2005 donc, et fait davantage le pont entre Grandaddy et Weezer - ou entre Pinback et Stars - ou entre Ozma et Spoon ... Bref. En 2006 sort le EP Les Uns Mais Pas Les Autres qui comporte six chansons tirées du précédent album traduites en français. Et last but not least, le fantastique Immaculate Machine's Fables est paru cette année, troisième effort du groupe et troisième réussite, avec des vrais morceaux de beau monde dedans.
Fox Jaws ont sorti cette année leur excellent debut albumGoodbye Doris.

"Deep within the domain of commuters, on the very edge of cottage country, lies the The Fracture Room, the rehearsal space and studio of Barrie, Ontario's Fox Jaws -- a group of friends and musicians who spend their time skirting the edges of music and the meaning of life in a not-so-small town in present-day Ontario. First known as Doris Day, the band has now changed their name to avoid the inevitable lawsuit that would likely ensue their coattails, forging forth with a proud identity and sound of their own.
After the release of their debut recording, an EP fondly entitled Extended Play, Fox Jaws brought forth a sophomore effort with their self-recorded EP, The Fracture Room Sessions. It seemed to capture the live sound and energy that the band had crafted over the first 2 years of its existence. Around this time, the band supplemented its original line-up of Dan Allen (guitar, keys, vocals), Brandyn Aikins (drums, vocals), Derek McColeman (guitar) and Brock Swanek (bass) with young lady vocalist Carleigh Aikins followed by seasoned guitarist/keyboardist Andrew Shropshire, adding new elements of depth and subtlety to both The Fracture Room Sessions and to the intense wall of noise style soundscapes created during their live performances. The band has just released their debut full-length entitled Goodbye Doris recorded by Ryan Mills (Most Serene Republic, Born Ruffians, Old Soul) in both his Toronto studio and the Fox Jaws homestead. The album has been released independently by the band to a good handful of great reviews; critics like NOW magazine, EXCLAIM, and Chromewaves.net have given the band's debut Goodbye Doris some sweet love: "Fox Jaws are real people ... But what they create is on the verge of brilliance, what they live are lives worth documentation, when they die it sounds amazing, when they breathe it brings the audience to life." -- Exclaim
In the past years Fox Jaws has had the pleasure of partaking in a wide variety of musical events; this includes sharing the stage with The Constantines, Wintersleep, Cuff The Duke, Grizzly Bear, Tokyo Police Club, The Meligrove Band, The Junction, Matt Mays, and The Most Serene Republic; having their music used in an independent skateboarding video ("First One's Free") and in the full-length film, "Fuel" as well as being featured at Pop Montreal, Over the Top, NXNE, Barrie Jazz, and SCENE festivals.
